Kseniya Simonova – Ukrainian Sand Artist
February 14, 2010
I must admit that before I saw the first video in recent weeks I had never known of sand painting as an art form. Since then I’ve looked at a number of YouTube videos of various artists and Kseniya Simonova is in a class alone. Aside from her talent, her creations are very relationship oriented and sensitive with a deep religious streak as evidenced by her use of the Church in her works.
Art is a distraction from pain and a window on the divine. I can’t get that phrase out of my head – it is something that Michelangelo said and I must say that if the soul is so disposed, he is right. Here is another of Kseniya Simonova’s videos. I will be following her work and presenting more of it as part of my quest for wellness.

- What Does the Prayer Really Say

Sand art seems special to me in its inherent humility. I once saw some nuns creating a mandala, but I have not seen anything quite like this before. Thank you for the introduction.
I like your idea of inherent humility. Simonova has tasted bitter suffering as people will see when I post more of her videos. She puts the human condition out there and it resonates even though many can’t understand Russian. Both art and music are a universal language and Simonova communicates beauty, suffering and joy without needing words. I am so glad you liked this.
